Ohio Au Naturel

I've been collecting pictures of various nature subjects recently, so I thought I'd share them all in one post. One of my favorite things in moving to Ohio is the difference in natural surroundings - plants, animals, and weather.

This is a bald eagle's nest near us - just outside of Gambier. It's not a very clear shot because we were so far away, and the surrounding area is protected. I had no idea these birds were anywhere close to us, and I had no idea they were so huge!
I'm not nearly as in awe of this, but Rick and I came across a snake on one walk along the Kokosing Gap Trail. I'm really glad Nora was completely oblivious; even with Rick throwing rocks at the snake, she had no idea it was there. :)
Also, our peonies finally bloomed. Only two blossoms have opened up so far, but they're beautiful. It's hard to tell in these pictures, but in the first one you can see some veins of dark pink on some of the petals.
Finally, one of my favorite things is how varied the weather is. Here are some summer storm clouds we've had recently.
People often ask us, "Why in the world would you move to Mount Vernon?!" But I honestly don't see why they sell this place short. I'm reminded often of how blessed we are to live in such a uniquely gorgeous and inspiring place.
